Recycling Guidelines for Unincorporated Sarasota County

Red Container

  • Cardboard (NEW: including flattened pizza boxes)
  • Writing and office paper
  • Junk mail
  • Envelopes (including envelopes with windows)
  • Newspapers (including inserts)
  • Magazines, catalogs, phonebooks
  • Paperboard (cereal boxes without liners, soda boxes, tissue boxes, etc.)
  • Paperback books (no hardback books)
  • Brown paper bags
  • Shredded paper (place in paper bag, NO plastic bags)

Place food-contaminated paper/cardboard products in the garbage. Remove liner and food from pizza boxes. Flatten cardboard boxes and cut down all cardboard to 2 feet by 3 feet.

Blue Container

  • Aluminum cans/foil trays
  • Steel and tin cans and lids
  • Aerosol cans (empty)
  • Glass bottles and jars (all colors)
  • Metal jar lids
  • Drink boxes
  • Milk/juice cartons

NEW: All plastics with the symbol numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 and that fit in the recycling bin (no Styrofoam®/Polystyrene number 6 materials)

  • No plastic bags, Styrofoam® products, coat hangers, pots, pans, dishes, pane glass or glassware
  • Lightly rinse all containers
